Thailand Team Takes Local School Under its Wing

Thai ChildrenBlueScope Steel Thailand employees have ‘adopted’ a local school, donating food, equipment and even lessons for some of the poorest children in the district.

Over the past six years, BlueScope Steel Thailand has donated steel building materials for a number of projects at the Ban Khao Huai Mahad School at Amphur Banchang, Rayong, including roofing for the school’s library.

But recently BlueScope Steel Thailand and its employees have taken the relationship a step further, participating in a Food Foundation program that pays for free meals for poor schoolchildren.

With over 130 students and nine teachers, the Ban Khao Huai Mahad School is considered one of the most disadvantaged in the region.

“Many of the families whose children attend the school have migrated from other parts of Thailand; they moved here because they can’t make an earning in their hometown and they saw a chance of growing agricultural products here like potatoes,” says BlueScope Steel Thailand’s Katanyoo Komutmas.

“A lot of these families cannot afford lunch for the children while they are in school.

“The money we and others donate to the Food Foundation helps support the cost of these lunches.”

On top of the regular support through the Food Foundation, BlueScope Steel Thailand and its employees also provide all the school meals on special days such as New Year’s Day or School Opening Day.

The employees have also donated sports equipment, clothing and toys, and provided English lessons for the children.

The Ban Khao Huai Mahad School’s motto is ‘a well educated person is a prosperous person’ – and with the ongoing support of BlueScope Steel Thailand and its employees, the schoolchildren are being given every opportunity to realise that ideal.
