Bikes at Western PortBlueScope Steel Western Port was presented in October 2004 with an appreciation award for the Company's support of the Hastings Blue Light Motorcycle Club. The club operates on seven hectares of BlueScope Steel's land adjacent to the Western Port flat steel metallic coating and painting operations.

The Hastings Blue Light Motorcycle Club was established in 2002 with the support of BlueScope Steel Western Port in conjunction with local community and police to provide young people and their families a safe and legal area for off-road motorcycle activities.

According to President Western Port, Mr Greg Waters, BlueScope Steel worked closely with club members and local police to help provide a motorcycling facility that encourages family participation, address safety issues in the community regarding unsafe and illegal bike use and encourage positive interaction between police, motorcycle users and other members of the community.

In accepting the award from the President of the Victorian Blue Light Council, Inspector Vic Dunn, Mr Waters said, "BlueScope Steel is pleased to be able to play a part in keeping our community safe by providing a suitable place for young people to pursue their interests in motorcycling sports."

Mr Waters added, "This motorcycling facility will also assist police avert tragedies from occurring by directing illegal bike riders away from backstreets and railway lines."

With more than 1200 members, the club's facility comprises a senior track and a supervised junior track. Since the approval was granted by the local council for the use of a section of Western Port's land as a motorcycle track, the club has made a number of improvements to the surroundings in an environmentally sensitive manner.

Mr Waters added, "I congratulate the Hastings Blue Light Motorcycle Club for their successful efforts in encouraging safe and responsible motorcycling within our community."
