BlueScope Steel's Western Port Works today presented a cheque for $60,000 to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council for the development of the Pelican Park Aquatic Centre at the Hastings foreshore in Victoria, Australia to mark the occasion of the Company's first year as a publicly listed company.
President BlueScope Steel Western Port, Mr Greg Waters, presented the cheque to the Mayor of the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Cr David Renouf, at a ceremony at the nearly completed community recreation facility.
“BlueScope Steel is very proud to be partnering with the community in this project. We have now donated more than $200,000 in cash and product to the Pelican Park Aquatic Centre development, and we are very pleased to be working closely with the shire council and the local councillors in providing such an outstanding facility,” Mr Waters said.
“It is very important to BlueScope Steel to have strong links with as well to support the communities in which we operate. Our community involvement in the Mornington Peninsula traverses the full range of community activities, from supporting the CFA, contributing to the better education of our youth, improving our environment, working with local government and sponsoring and supporting community activities such as this wonderful new aquatic centre.
BlueScope Steel spends tens of millions of dollars every year in the Mornington Peninsula community - putting money into local households and businesses. Apart from being the top employer in the Mornington Peninsula, the business also employs local contractors to help maintain and upgrade the plant and purchases local goods and services including photocopy paper, food, transport, machine components and engineering services.
“We are delighted to contribute to such an exciting project such as the new Pelican Park Aquatic Centre and to provide lasting benefits for the next generation. The new community recreation facility is dynamic and flexible, providing a great showcase for BlueScope Steel building products. It will be much more than just a swimming facility as it offers a range of solutions to meet community needs,” said Mr Waters.
BlueScope Steel’s Western Port plant is one of Victoria’s largest manufacturing operations, with capacity to process 1.4 million tonnes of steel each year. Located on a 700-hectare site near Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, the business employs more than 1200 people.
The plant specialises in the manufacture of hot rolled, cold rolled, metallic coated and organic finished steel sheets and coils for customers in the building and construction, automotive and manufacturing industries. Key products are COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel. It is a major manufacturing operation of BlueScope Steel Limited, a Top 50 Company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
