The Australian Pavilion, with a stunning exterior fully clad in weathering steel, will be on show when the largest World Expo in history officially opens today. The Shanghai World Expo is expected to attract more than 70 million visitors over the course of the six month event.

The weathering steel exterior was manufactured at BlueScope's Port Kembla Steelworks in the Illawarra, NSW, and provided by BlueScope Buildings, Facade Solutions.

Using the iconic landmark of Uluru as the theme, the Australian Pavilion's facade was custom designed to embrace the curvature of the building. The weathering steel will change colour naturally, much like Uluru and outback Australia, evolving through various stages of patina throughout the period of Expo.

Said Antony Martin of Wood March Architecture, Project Architect for the Australian Pavilion: "We specifically selected weathering steel due to its unique durability, texture, patina and its ability to evoke the Australian landscape."

BlueScope's Facade Solutions business is the first in Australia to provide cassette-style weathering steel panels. The cassettes are formed using fully automatic folding machinery. The automated process allows absolute alignment between the steel panels due to exceptional precision (0.3mm) and provides virtually unlimited customisation.

"This has been a very exciting and challenging project to work on," said Catherine Jacob, Facades Manager. "We had a non-negotiable deadline to complete the work and because of security, limited access. But we have the technical expertise and familiarity working with this steel to attain the best result. It's a stunning, contemporary platform to showcase Australian creativity, innovation and achievement and certainly, a beautiful building we can be very proud of."

BlueScope's Facade Solutions business provided a turnkey solution for the design, supply and installation of the weathered steel facade of the Australian Pavilion.

BlueScope Steel has been operating in China for more than 20 years. The Company has been trading with China since it first exported steel to the country in 1915. BlueScope has been established in the Asia region for over 40 years.
