In a speech to the Securities Institute of Australia in Melbourne, BHP Steel Managing Director and CEO Kirby Adams said the company is on track to exceed a full year net profit of A$400 million.
Mr Adams pointed to continuing strong demand for the company's products in the Australian market and growth in its Asian markets - particularly in the building and construction sector.
He said Asia is a core growth region for BHP Steel and the company has a unique marketing footprint in the region, with particular strength in downstream, value-added steel products.
And he said BHP Steel's (now known as BlueScope Steel) operations in Asia would make an increasingly important contribution to the company's earnings.
