Caring for the Illawaarra Environment Report

The Port Kembla Steelworks' 5 Year Environmental Improvement Plan, which came into effect in January 2003, will see the company engage in a number of important new projects including:

Reduction in benzene emissions from Gas Processing;
Monitoring and reduction in fugitive benzene emissions from the Light Oil Plant;
Video surveillance system to monitor fugitive emissions from the Coke Ovens;
Continuous monitors for the Coke Ovens Waste Heat stacks;
Improved collection of kish emissions from hot metal dumping at 21 Area;
Port Kembla Harbour Water Quality Survey;
Stormwater management plan;
Community Noise Survey and Noise Source Survey;
Briquetting Plant to recycle iron bearing dusts;
ISO 140001 environmental certification.

In addition, we are undertaking a major water recycling initiative with Sydney Water that will deliver outstanding environmental benefits for the whole region.

But our environmantal work at Port Kembla is not finished. We are committed to continual improvement of our environmental performance. The community expects it, and we expect it of ourselves. This report, while highlighting some of the major projects that have dramatically improved the Steelworks’ environmental performance, also highlights the major projects in our new Environmental Improvement Plan.
