Environmental Science Cadetships

Environmental Science

There is no question that environmental issues, and how companies and individuals manage their environmental footprint are growing issues for Australia and the world.

As an Environmental Science degree cadet at the Port Kembla Steelworks you will be involved in understanding the environmental risks and impacts of current processes and technologies, reviewing monitoring programs to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and investigating environmental incidents.

You will rotate through various sections of the plant in an environmental capacity to gain an appreciation of the different iron and steelmaking processes.

In later years you will be involved with negotiations with government authorities, waste recycling options, investigate water and energy conservation initiatives, evaluate the environmental impacts of engineering projects and development activities, as well as participate in the planning process for new projects and more global issues such as the potential impact of climate change issues on the steel industry.

You will also become involved in effectively communicating relevant environmental issues to other technical staff, managers, public interest groups and the public.

A major part of your development as a cadet will involve understanding the importance of safety and its significance in our operations.
